About our Academy

SS. Mary & John’s is a Catholic Primary Academy and is part of The St Francis and St Clare Catholic Multi Academy Company. 

The original school was founded in 1869 and was sited next to the parish church at Snow Hill. Then the primary school was transferred to its present site in Caledonia Road in 1969.  The board of directors are responsible and accountable for all of the academies within the MAC. Each Academy has its own Governing Body with delegated functions from the Board of Directors. Each Academy has its fundamental foundations in the person and teachings of Jesus Christ and His Church. 

The primary aim of SS. Mary and John’s Catholic Primary Academy is to ensure that all children who attend here will receive the highest quality of education, exceptional spiritual development, outstanding care and nurture through a broad and balanced curriculum with Christ at the centre of all we do.

We also aim to ensure that:

  • Christ is made known to all
  • Parents are supported in the formation and education of their children
  • The Academy is of service to the Church
  • The Academy is of service to our local community, wider society and global community.

 

SS. Mary and John’s Catholic Primary Academy and Nursery is a single level building, comprising of eight classrooms with resource areas. We have spacious, wide corridors with some small group teaching areas. We have a well stocked a library, and a large octagonal hall with an altar recess.  Within the grounds are three playgrounds, an early years garden area with activity equipment and large sports field with outdoor Gym equipment. We also have a beautiful ‘Peace Garden’ which is dedicated in loving memory of a much loved and tragically lost pupil Jasmine, and our former chair of Governors, Mr Darmody, both of whom were a huge part of our Academy family, are loved, missed and remembered by our school community.
